College students love their iPhones. With access to games, email, music, photos, the Internet, and texting, the iPhone gives students a fabulous source of study distractions. At the same time, however, the iPhone can be an invaluable resource to students -- especially when it comes to the many educational apps that are available for free or for a small price on the iPhone.

How to Find Useful iPhone Applications

Finding useful iPhone apps is easy.

  • Touch the "Categories" icon on the bottom of the display.
  • A list of categories will appear. There are two categories that will be most useful to you: "Education" and "Reference."
  • Touch either the "Education" or the "Reference" icon. A list of the top 25 paid applications in this category will appear. To see additional apps, scroll down and touch the "Twenty Five More" rectangle.
  • To find out more about an application, click on it and read the description. If you want to purchase that app, click on the price that is listed on the top left hand corner.
  • To see free apps, click on the "Top Free" tab on the top of the page. The top 25 free applications will appear. To see more, touch "Twenty Five More" at the bottom of the page.
  • To find out more about an application, click on it and read the description. To add it to your iPhone, touch the "Free" tab at the top left hand corner.

Explore the App Store to find out what's available. Here are some of the many applications that may help you in your studies.

Wiki Mobile

Wikipedia has become an invaluable research tool for college students, and Wiki Mobile puts this massive encyclopedia in your palm. This paid app makes it easy to browse Wikipedia in 32 languages, and allows users to save Wiki pages for quick reference.

Exambusters

Exambusters are a series of apps that are designed by educators to help students prepare for exams. These apps include a test bank of sample exam questions and information organized into convenient flashcards. Exambusters are available in biology, chemistry, physics, algebra, geometry, American history, world history, and a variety of languages.

iHomework

Having trouble managing your time and schedule? This app is specifically designed to help students keep track of their assignments and obligations.

Language Apps

For anyone studying a language, the App Store offers a variety of free and paid apps to help. Many of these apps offer interactive lessons, games, and stories to help students pick up the language. Language apps are available for Spanish, French, German, Italian, Russian, Polish, Czech, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Hebrew, Arabic, Swahili, Latin, Greek, Dutch, and Yiddish. For quick help with translation, iTranslate apps are available in a variety of languages.

MyWisdom

Need a great quote to add to a paper for some pizazz? The MyWisdom app has a huge collection of quotes that can be searched by category. It also includes a "Wisdom Quiz" feature that tests your knowledge of famous quotes.

Graphing Calculators

Graphing calculators can cost upwards of $100, but for $4.99 or less, students can purchase a fully functional graphing calculator for their iPhone.

Chemistry Applications and Periodic Tables

Whether you need a simple periodic table or a complicated list of chemistry formulas, the App Store offers a variety of paid and free applications. Two of the more popular apps are The Chemical Touch (available in a paid and a "lite" free edition) and Chemistry Formulas.

Using the iPhone as a Study Tool

Professors bemoan devices such as iPhones because they give students all kinds of new ways to goof off. However, if used correctly, the iPhone can be an incredibly useful tool to help students learn, study, and stay organized. Explore the App Store to find out what's available for your academic needs.
