Naomi,
I've taught at the college level and rarely heard excuses but one was great. One student had to miss class and did not let me know in advance. He returned and said, "He was sorry that he couldn't let me know in advance but he had 18 hours notice to pack his gear and get to the airport. He was with the Army Reserves and was shipped to Bosnia where he spent 10 days sitting on a roof top picking off snipers in the woods before they got him." The story was true. I told him that this was the best excuse I had ever heard for missing class.
